Last year, around this time, we started seriously looking into buying a new boat. Having owned Wind Shadow and after visiting countless boat shows, we knew exactly what we wanted in a new boat. We had some very general needs, which were, it had to be above 39 feet, with a separate shower, at least 2 cabins with queen size beds (I couldn’t take the V-berth sleeping anymore) and it had to be in decent conditions. We did not mind having to do some cosmetic work on it, but we wanted something that would feel like home since we planned on living on it full time. Our dream have always been to own a catamaran due to my serious sea sickness problem. I told Maik, I do not know how we can live and travel on a boat if I can’t stand the motions. I become completely useless, drowning in sickness, when ever the seas become rough.
We contacted a broker and barely three days later, on a magical day in April 2017, he emailed us and said, “We have a boat that just came up on the market in Tortola. It is not posted on our site yet, but you have to look at it. If you like it, you need to put a deposit on it because it will not last.” He sent us pictures and we couldn’t believe how nice and well kept it was. Plus, it was a Catamaran! The very next day, we wired the deposit and not too long later, we were flying to Tortola to look at the boat.
In May 2017, after negotiations, two separate surveys, more negotiating, fixing things we wanted change, we became proud owners of a beautiful 2010 Fountaine Pajot Lipari 41. Her name was Kinka, but she became Hatchi. “Aaaah-choo”, the sound you make when you sneeze. The sound that our son, Kais, thought was the most hilarious noise and went into an uncontrollable laughter whenever he heard it. He couldn’t say aaaah-choo, so instead he called the sound Hatchi. So we named her “Hatchi”.
Hatchi has 4 cabins with 4 queen size beds, 2 separate heads (toilets) and showers, plenty of storage, three-stove top propane burners, beautiful dark leather in the “living room” and a spacious cockpit area.
Maik and his father sailed Hatchi from Tortola in July 2017 to Punta Gorda, Florida, where we planned on staying. On October 16, 2017, we set sail to the east coast of Florida to get much needed work done on the boat to make it family friendly (new Bimini, new full enclosure, new trampoline, two new AC’s, brand new electronics, converter, and some other minor things). We even had two brand new engines installed because of an emission recall (although the previous engines had absolutely nothing wrong with them and only had 900 hours on them).
We now live aboard full time in a beautiful Marina (Suntex Marina) in Hollywood. Excitement cannot begin to describe the feeling we have to finally have the boat of our dreams and becoming vagabonds.
So let the journey begin!
