You see all these wonderful couples floating around the web, sharing their adventurous life aboard a sailboat, and it makes you wonder, can I do this with kids? The answer is absolutely! You will not be the first or the last. The only problem is you don’t know how. Well this is the ultimate guide to sailing with kids. This will make your life aboard so much easier.
You must ask yourself if your kids will be safe living on a boat?
Kais and Lila are very young, therefore safety is even extremely important for us. We are adamant about the kids knowing how to swim. Lila isn’t at the age where she can swim, but we make sure to always have her in the water so she can be comfortable in it until she is able to swim. Here are some safety items you should have for your kids while on a boat.
-Tethers and Harnesses
-First Aid Kit
We have baby chairs, high chairs and bouncers to restrain Kais and Lila while underway and we are unable to be with them. We utilize these items, especially while docking.
Here are some examples of a chair and rocker we use are listed below:
Chicco Caddy Hook-On Chair
Bright Starts Rocker
When kids start to move, speak and understand, the best thing to do with them is communicate about safety and set ground rules while on the boat, dinghy and at the docks.
-Communicate Cleary what is expected of them.
-Have safety plans made and rehearsed.
-Prepare in advance what to do in case of an emergency.
